Why It Matters

Equipment failure is a patient-safety problem before it's a repair bill.

Every chair, compressor, waterline and sterilizer in your operatory is part of the standard of care you deliver. The water your patients rinse with and the suction you put in their mouths run through filters and lines nobody sees. When those go bad, the unit keeps running and looking fine — you find out from a failed spore test, a cancelled schedule, or an inspector standing in your sterilization room.

From our service calls

Every one of these came out of a working operatory. Filters, traps and lines like these sit directly upstream of the water and suction that go into a patient's mouth — and nothing on the outside of the unit tells you they look like this. Viewer discretion: these photos are exactly as ugly as they sound.

1 / 14
Dental vacuum room contaminated with sludge from a failed system, found by R.D.S.
Before
A vacuum room after a failure nobody caught. That is not dirt on the floor, the cabinet and the equipment — it came out of the lines.
Bucket of sludge and debris removed from a dental vacuum pump during service
Before
One bucket. That is what came out of a single practice's vacuum pump on one visit.
Dental suction solids collector packed with debris, found during an R.D.S. service call
Before
Suction solids collector opened up. The label on the frame says replace monthly — every drop of suction from every operatory passes through here first.
Dental amalgam separator canister packed full of brown sediment
Before
Separator canister filled to the top with sediment. Past this point the system has nowhere left to put solids.
Dental vacuum solids collector bowl full of brown sludge
Before
Another collector, another practice, same story. Everything the vacuum pulled out of patients' mouths, settled in the bowl.
Vacuum system collector canister under a dental practice vacuum unit
Before
Nothing on the outside of a vacuum system tells you what the canister underneath looks like. You have to take it apart and look.
Clogged vacuum pump inlet strainer sitting on a stained mechanical room floor
Before
Vacuum pump inlet strainer. Look past the strainer at the floor around it — that's what a system nobody checks does to a mechanical room.
Dental compressor water separator bowl full of contaminated condensate
Before
Water separator bowl on a dental compressor. That is the air line feeding handpieces and air-water syringes.
Dental chair umbilical with the outer sheath split open and wiring exposed
Hazard
A chair umbilical split open in two places with the conductors showing. Nobody notices this until it becomes a problem.
Dental chair umbilical patched with electrical tape by a previous repair
Prior repair
Electrical tape holding an umbilical together. A patch like this buys time. It does not fix anything.
Inside a dental chair junction box during R.D.S. service work
On the job
Inside a chair junction box. This is the part of your operatory you never see — and the part that decides whether the chair works Monday morning.
Clean, well-maintained AirStar 50 dental air compressor
After
A compressor on a maintenance schedule. This is what the equipment room is supposed to look like.
DentaPure dental waterline cartridge installed and dated inside a chair base
After
Waterline cartridge in, dated and documented. It takes minutes when it is on a schedule.
Freshly replaced and dated VistaPure dental water filtration cartridges
After
Water filtration changed out and dated on the label, so anyone who opens the cabinet can see exactly when it was last done.

Swipe or use the arrow keys — the last three show equipment that is actually on a schedule

When was the last time anyone actually looked at your filters, traps and lines? Put the whole practice on a schedule and stop finding out the hard way.

General information only, not legal or regulatory advice. Requirements vary by state dental board and by equipment manufacturer — always follow your manufacturer's instructions for use and your state's current rules. R.D.S. repairs, services and documents your equipment. We do not perform spore testing or any biological monitoring — indicators, testing and results remain the responsibility of your practice or your monitoring service.
